Hundreds of Cambodians from all walks of life, and even some tourists, cheered President Ramos-Horta, holding the President and the King’s portraits, waving the two countries’ flags, along the wide ave-nues leading to the royal palace.

His Majesty King Preah Bat Samadech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni welcomed the President at the main entrance to the his-toric Royal Palace where the Timorese leader reviewed a military guard of honor before proceeding to the scheduled royal audience with His Majesty.

During the royal audience, the President commended His Majesty for his wisdom in guiding the people of Cambodia and said warm words of friendship and respect about the King and Queen Mother.

The Timorese Head of State had a working session with Prime Min-ister Hun Sen and other members of the cabinet.

In the course of these meetings, the President stated that “peace and stability are being consolidated in Timor-Leste, and the economy has been growing at double digit level for the last three years”.

The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate also indicated that Timor-Leste is looking forward to diversify and expanding existing regional trade relations to include possibilities of importing consumer items from the Kingdom of Cambodia.

In this context, Prime Minister responded that Cambodia is ready to export rice and other consumer items and indicated readiness to send a business delegation to Timor-Leste in the near future to further explore trade and investment opportunities in Timor-Leste. Mr. Hun Sen also expressed the desire in sending a delegation of experts in the energy sector to learn from Timor-Leste’s very successful experience in managing its oil and gas revenues from the Timor Gap.

Concluding his State Visit, Dr.Ramos-Horta said: “I was very pleased with the visit, the very substantive and productive con-versation with His Majesty Preah Bat Samadech Preah Borom-neath Norodom Sihamoni, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo, Prime Minister H.E. Hun Sen and leaders of the Na-tional Parliament, Samadech Akka Moha Ponhea Chakrei, H.E. 

Heng Samrin and Senate, Samadech Akka Moha Thamma Pothisal H.E. Chea Sim. All were perfect hosts and received me and my delegation with such warmth. 

In particular I heard from Prime Minster Hun Sen very eloquent endorsement of Timor-Leste’s ASEAN membership aspirations”. 

The President stated: “We will do our very best to be a positive, constructive, moderating and proactive member of ASEAN. We are a functioning and dynamic democracy with growing robust economic and natural resources including oil and gas. So we will not be a burden to other ASEAN fellow members”.
