Upon learning of the election results, the President of the Republic spoke this morning on the phone with José Ramos Horta, to whom he conveyed, on behalf of the Portuguese People and on his own, the warmest congratulations on the election as President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, sincerely wishing you success in the exercise of the noble functions that you will be called upon to perform again.
In the year in which the 20th anniversary of Timor-Leste’s independence is celebrated, it is gratifying to see the expressive commitment of the Timorese people to the principles and values of democracy, solidarity, progress, dialogue and, on the external agenda, multilateralism and friendship.
The two statesmen reiterated that the close and diversified cooperation that characterizes the relationship between the two sister countries will certainly continue to be deepened, not only bilaterally, but also within the framework of the CPLP.
Reference was also made to the visit, next month, by the President of the Republic to Timor-Leste, to participate in the commemorations of the 20th anniversary of independence and to be present at the inauguration of the new President.
