PRESS STATEMENT
BY PRESIDENT J. RAMOS-HORTA ON THE PASSING OF ACTIVIST JOHN M. MILLER
It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of my dear friend, John M. Miller.
John Miller was a lifelong human rights and solidarity activist from the United States. In 1991, he co-founded East Timor and Indonesia Action Network (ETAN) and later served as Coordinator for ETAN.
Through ETAN, John coordinated grassroots campaigns, disseminated critical information about human rights violations during the occupation. Prior to his work with ETAN, Miller was involved in solidarity movements for the people of Vietnam, Cambodia, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia. He was known for his quiet determination and deep moral conviction that the world had a duty to act against oppression. For decades, he placed the cause of Timor-Leste above personal recognition, working with dedication to amplify our voice to the world. John Miller became one of our most tireless advocates during our struggle for independence.
As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his extraordinary life and legacy, one that will continue to inspire generations of Timorese and human rights defenders around the world.
On behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, I extend my deepest condolences to his family. May they find comfort in knowing that his life made a profound and lasting difference to the people of Timor-Leste.
