President José Ramos-Horta received the honorary doctorate degrees from three universities in Cambodia — BELTEI International University, Cambodian University, and Paragon International University — in recognition of his capacity and  contribution to the world in the areas of conflict resolution and leadership.

“They awarded the doctor of honorarium degree to me as a recognition of my contribution in various areas in international relations, leadership, conflict management and others. This doctor of honorarium degree is a diploma for recognizing someone who is not a student of a university, but his or her contribution to the community or countries in the world qualifies him or her to receive the “dotor honoris causa”, Ramos-Horta said.

He noted that the bestowing of the degrees contributed to the strengthening of the relations among the universities and individuals in high institutions in Cambodia. “Almost all universities in the world do this, particularly strengthening relations among universities and individuals to whom these academic degrees are awarded,” he said. The presentations were done at a ceremony attended by more than 1,000 students. The President spoke to the audience about the experience of Timor-Leste, Indonesia and Cambodia in the context of reconciliation. The Cambodian Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, Hangchuon Naron, other members of the Government and the delegation of Timor-Leste participated in the ceremony.
